The Allure of Trends
Every January, inboxes flood with “Top 10 Marketing Trends You Can’t Ignore.” From AI tools to new social platforms, the message is always the same: adopt this now or get left behind.
But here’s the truth—chasing trends without strategy is one of the fastest ways to waste your marketing budget.
Trends Are Tactics, Not Strategy
Trends can be useful. But without context, they’re just shiny distractions. A B2B manufacturer might not benefit from TikTok no matter how many trend lists promote it. Likewise, AI-driven personalization is meaningless if your website can’t convert visitors.
The Real Problem: Misalignment
Trends become dangerous when companies implement them without asking: Does this fit our audience, our goals, and our capacity? Too often, leaders spend budget reacting to what’s “new” instead of what’s “necessary.”
Use Trends as Tools, Not Drivers
At Meier Strategy Group, we advise clients to treat trends as potential tools to test—not default moves. Strategy should always be the compass that decides whether a trend makes sense.
